Improving automobile insurance ratemaking using telematics: incorporating mileage and driver behaviour data

چکیده
We show how data collected from a GPS device can be incorporated in motor insurance ratemaking. The calculation of premium rates based upon driver behaviour represents an opportunity for the insurance sector. Our approach is based on count data regression models for frequency, where exposure is driven by the distance travelled and additional parameters that capture characteristics of automobile usage and which may affect claiming behaviour. We propose implementing a classical frequency model that is updated with telemetrics information. We illustrate the method using real data from usage-based insurance policies. Results show that not only the distance travelled by the driver, but also driver habits, significantly influence the expected number of accidents and, hence, the cost of insurance coverage. This paper provides a methodology including a transition pricing transferring knowledge and experience that the company already had before the telematics data arrived to the new world including telematics information.

Document De Treball Xreap2008-9 a Priori Ratemaking Using Bivariate Poisson Regression Models
In automobile insurance, it is useful to achieve a priori ratemaking by resorting to generalized linear models, and here the Poisson regression model constitutes the most widely accepted basis. However, insurance companies distinguish between claims with or without bodily injuries, or claims with full or partial liability of the insured driver. This paper examines an a priori ratemaking procedu...

متن کاملExposure as Duration and Distance in Telematics Motor Insurance Using Generalized Additive Models
In Pay-As-You-Drive (PAYD) automobile insurance, the premium is fixed based on the distance traveled, while in usage-based insurance (UBI) the driving patterns of the policyholder are also considered. In those schemes, drivers who drive more pay a higher premium compared to those with the same characteristics who drive only occasionally, because the former are more exposed to the risk of accide...
متن کاملIdentifying and classifying the factors affecting risk in automobile hull insurance in Iran using fuzzy Delphi method and factor analysis
Automobile hull insurance has attracted much attention due to the high rate of vehicle applications in daily lives. Since purchasing these policies is optional in Iran and their premium rates are set competitively, a competition is formed among the insurance companies for attracting low risk drivers. However, most of the insurers still use comparative rates and pay no or less attention to the f...

This paper assesses the ability of automobile insurance prices to distinguish the 2:1 ratio of men's to women's annual mileage, which is linked to a similar ratio of accident involvement per year. Review of current price classes by driver sex and age, by future mileage, and by past driver record reveals severe limitations to their capacity to assess women's lower mileage exposure to risk of acc...
